Cute or Creepy? 5 Dog Breeds You Won't Believe

At Fresh Pawz, we love dogs of all shapes and sizes. Chonky bulldogs, gentle giants, and tiny pocket pups all deserve fresh puppy merch! That said, some dogs are a little funkier lookin' than others. We've compiled some of the craziest dog breeds around today, starting with what appears to be a very large mop...

The Puli

Puli Dogs
If you ever wanted a dog that doubles as a mop, meet the Puli. The Puli isn't exactly fluffy, furry, or hairy. Instead, it's rockin' full-on dreads. The Puli's origins are unknown, but they're not new. 2,000 years ago, they were already helping herd sheep...even though they look almost exactly like them.
Their long, rope-like fur coils into cords naturally, but don't be fooled! Puli owners must groom their dogs regularly to keep their "coat" looking even and clean. They're much livelier than the average mop, too. Pulis are actually very energetic and intelligent- if you buy one, expect to see a joyful rug greeting you at the gate!

The Peruvian Inca Orchid

As exotic as they sound, the Peruvian Inca Orchid has roots in Peruvian culture dating back to 750 A.D. Back then, snuggling these hairless dogs was thought to help cure common ailments, like stomachaches.
It's hard to find these dogs today, but some breeders are still keeping this feisty, odd-looking breed going. They really are almost totally hairless, so owners should treat their naked dog babies to regular baths and LOTS of lotion. Can you believe Peruvian Inca's can even get acne?

The Norwegian Lundehund

Norwegian Lundehound
Plenty of people have double-jointed elbows, but this oddball can stretch its legs in all directions! It looks pretty ordinary, but when you get up close you'll see it actually has six toes on each foot. Meet one in person, and you might find out that its neck is so flexible, it can touch its forehead to its spine! Because it's so rare and difficult to breed, the Lundehund has a few known genetic ailments. Even so, this contortionist pup is pretty cool.

The Chinese Crested

Chinese Crested
Ever heard the phrase "so ugly it's cute"? That phrase was written just for the Chinese Crested Dog. No one knows quite where the Chinese Crested originated, but it wasn't China!
Most pictures showcase the *ahem* unique beauty of the hairless variety of the breed, but it actually comes in two varieties, one with hair and one without. A frequent winner of the "World's Ugliest Dog Contest", we can't help but love these frail, furless floofs.

The Xoloitzcuintli

Xolo Hairless Dog
No, we can't pronounce it either. The Xoloitzcuintli, (pronounced Sho-lo-eets-quint-lee, if you're brave) is often called the Xolo, or Mexican Hairless. The Xolo has been around since the time of the Aztecs, who believed the god Xolotl created the breed from a sliver of the Bone of Life- the very same one used in mythology to create humans!
The breed is so strange looking that a few people have mistaken them for the mythological Chupacabra...and until they mature, they act just as wild! Overall, they're a fairly healthy, happy breed, but they do require a dedicated skincare routine to help keep them looking and feeling their best.

The Puli has enough fluff to go around, but if you're the proud owner of a hairless dog or a petite breed, a stylish extra layer will be totally appreciated. What does your funky pup look like? Share your favorite unique breed in the comments!
